Adur, West & East Worthing Party including East Arun

Incredible night for the Liberal Democrats

After weeks of Liberal Democrat campaigning that has had the Conservatives thoroughly panicked, the results of the Witney by-election were announced early this morning.

The brilliant Liz Leffman got just over 30% of the vote and secured 11,611 votes, putting her second to the new MP, Robert Courts. You’ll probably be aware that this seat is the former Prime Minister, David Cameron, and is one of the safest Conservative seats in the country – until now.

The Conservatives had their majority reduced by more than 20,000 votes.

Robert Courts won by 5,702 votes, with the party’s vote share falling from 60% in 2015 to 45%. The Witney by-election result is the largest swing from Conservative to Liberal Democrat since 1997 and if the result was replicated at a General Election, we would gain 26 seats from the Conservatives! We started this election as 50/1 outsiders on 6.8% of the vote; we actually took 30% of the vote, slashing the Tory majority.

Tonight’s result shows that we are the only party that can win seats off the Tories and deny them a majority in 2020. The #LibDemFightback is well underway and we can’t wait to replicate that here in Adur & Worthing.
