Sharon Bowles continues the fight for more vaccinations in developing countries

Sharon Bowles MEP for South-East England, has signed a Written Declaration urging the European Commission to continue its ‘commitment to reducing the number of vaccine-preventable deaths‘ in the developing world.

With EU support, the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (GAVI) has made great progress in saving lives and expanding immunisation coverage in the world’s poorest countries, with 288 million immunised and an estimated 5 million future deaths prevented.
However, despite advances, it is estimated that 1.7 million children die from vaccine-preventable diseases each year.

Sharon said: “The fight against preventable disease in the developing world is a responsibility we must not shirk, even in times of austerity. While I am pleased there is support for GAVI’s work, I believe more can be done which is why I have signed the Written Declaration. That said, multinationals operating in the developing world avoided paying $165 billion in taxes to host governments last year, money which could be used to pay for more vaccinations.”
