Southern Rail: drivers balloted on strike action

More misery for Southern Rail passengers as drivers will be balloted for industrial action – after last-ditch talks failed to resolve a row over driver-only trains.

Plans to extend driver-only operated trains are opposed by both Aslef and the RMT. Aslef, which was blocked from taking action by a court injunction earlier this year, will ballot its drivers on Southern for industrial action after talks at the union’s head office on Monday failed to resolve the problems at the heart of this dispute. The union’s general secretary, Mick Cash, said:

“The solution to this dispute can be achieved easily through a cast-iron guarantee of a second, safety critical member of staff on all current services with a guard.” Three further walkouts are planned by the RMT in November and December.

This all comes after a terrible week for passengers and the publication of a Transport Select Committee report confirming an “unacceptable” lack of transparency from the DfT; the report is dominated by the problems faced by Govia Thameslink Railway passengers AND that passengers have faced problems trying to claim back delayed journey compensation.
Adur & Worthing Liberal Democrats say enough is enough and we’re supporting a petition to put more pressure on the Government to dump Southern Rail who cannot be trusted to deliver rail services any longer and hand over the contract to Transport For London.
