West Sussex Two-year-olds to get early years education boost

Thousands of two-year-olds will get free early years education in the South East, the Government has announced. West Sussex  is to be allocated 1500 new places under the scheme.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg announced a shake-up of the system which is aimed at helping children from disadvantaged backgrounds and around 18,200 two-year-olds in the South East are expected to get free early years education from September.

It comes on top of the three and four-year-olds in the region who already receive 15 free hours each week.

Catherine  Bearder, Liberal Democrat MEP for South-East Englnd, welcomed the news and said it would be boost for struggling families.

Catherine  said: “Early years education gives young children a great start and prepares them for school. But it is also a huge help to parents who may be struggling to juggle work commitments and having young children. The Lib Dems are ensuring one of the Coalition Government’s main priorities is closing the gap between the poorest children and their more well-off peers.”

Nick added: “There will be more – and free – childcare, it will be higher quality and it will be more flexible for parents.”
