Self-service terminals are being installed at Chichester Library

Self-service terminals are being installed at Chichester Library when it closes from 7pm next Friday (October 7). The terminals will speed up transactions and allow staff to make better use of time.

Three out of six West Sussex libraries earmarked for the system are now using the terminals. They have proved popular at Crawley and East Grinstead Libraries, and have just been installed at Horsham Library. There are plans to install more terminals at Worthing, Littlehampton, Haywards Heath and Bognor Regis.

West Sussex County Council Deputy Leader, Lionel Barnard, who oversees the Library Service, said: “The self-service system allows you to borrow and return your loans quickly and easily. You just follow the instructions on the simple step by step screen, or a member of staff will be on hand to help.

“You can even print a list of what you’ve borrowed, check when an item is due for return, and make any cash payments.”

People can still borrow up to 20 items before the temporary closure.  Chichester Library will re-open on Monday October 31 at 9am. Meanwhile the nearest Libraries are Bognor Regis, Selsey and Southbourne.

No redundancies are being caused by the new system, known as RFID, or Radio Frequency Identification. The only change to staff was achieved during the library service restructure in March, when a vacant post was removed in anticipation.
