Car parks unsafe in Tory hands

Worthing Liberal Democrats are astonished the Borough Council’s Tory administration has yet another “misunderstanding” on the wording of a car parking legal document with one of its suppliers.

It would appear in this case a dispute with NCP has the potential to cost Worthing’s taxpayers £600,000 plus. It is unacceptable.

This is the second time in less than six months the wording of a car parking legal document signed by the Tory administration has been revealed to potentially lose Worthing money. It was through questioning in the Chamber Lib Dem Group Leader Alan Rice uncovered the leaking of millions to West Sussex on the car parking enforcement contract with NSL. That document was signed by the Tories in 2007.

Worthing Liberal Democrats have three simple questions:

(a) who signed the Deed of Variation with NCP ?

(b) did the Cabinet Member for Environment read the Deed of Variation?

(c) will the same officers be negotiating with West Sussex on the renewal of the car parking enforcement contract?

Alan Rice said: “The Tories have told us again and again car parks would be better in-house and safe in their hands. How can we believe them when not just once, but twice they don’t appear to be able to read a simple legal document and understand its content?”
