Helping West Sussex’s ageing population keep warm

West Sussex County Council is backing Age UK’s Bobble Day on February 10.

This will mark the big finale of Age UK’s Spread the Warmth Campaign to reduce suffering and preventable winter deaths among older people, which West Sussex County Council has been pleased to help publicise.

This is because 12% of older people in West Sussex live on a low income with many in fuel poverty.

As part of Bobble Day, campaign supporters have either bought or made a Bobble hat, which they will be wearing on the day, and organised other fundraising events.

The day also links in well with our own Age with Confidence campaign in which our vision is to make sure that people are confident in preparing for and living well in old age.

Cabinet Member for Adults’ Services Peter Catchpole said: “Many older people find they can not afford to heat themselves properly or live in poorly insulated homes and I will be supporting Bobble Day to raise awareness of this issue.

“Spread the Warmth has been an enormous boon to some of our elderly residents while our Age With Confidence initiative is aimed at ensuring the services are there when they are needed and that families can plan ahead financially so they can better manage the costs of old age.

“Bobble Day is an eye-catching initiative that fits with our vision. We want to make sure people are confident in preparing for and living well in old age.”
