Shoreham Footbridge to close for six weeks

The existing Shoreham Footbridge will close for approximately six weeks on Thursday, September 13.

Significant progress has been made on preparations ahead of the construction of the new £9.8 million replacement bridge.

However work moving an underwater cable to a safer position, under the riverbed away from the construction zone, has taken longer than planned.

This has resulted in the cable now needing to be temporarily repositioned on the existing bridge.

The complexity of the work forced a change in working methods, meaning the closure date for the existing footbridge had to be brought forward.

The work must be completed so critical piling operations can take place from Monday, September 17 – a timeframe governed by high equinoctial tides which occur at that time.

This will ensure the underwater cabling work is finished and the existing bridge re-opens safely to pedestrians, while construction of the new bridge continues simultaneously.

County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, Pieter Montyn, said: “I am conscious of the inconvenience that this is going to cause residents and users of the bridge and I apologise for the short notice of this closure.

“Unfortunately marine work such as this presents many challenges and the results cannot always be predicted in advance.

“We have made a number of alternative arrangements to ensure the disruption is minimised.”

A free bus service for pedestrians and wheelchair users will be operating at the following times:

Shoreham Beach non-stop service to Shoreham High Street:

Mondays to Saturdays: 5.10am and every 15 minutes until 12.10am.

Sundays:  7am and every 15 minutes until 11.30pm.

Shoreham High Street non-stop service to Shoreham Beach:

Mondays to Saturdays:  5.20am and every 15 minutes until 12.20am.

Sundays: 7.10am and every 15 minutes until 11.40pm.

On Shoreham Beach the bus will pick up from a temporary bus stop on the south side of Riverside Road, near Benbow Close. The pick-up point in Shoreham High Street will be the bus stop adjacent to the northern end of the footbridge.

For mobility scooters users, Adur Community Transport is providing a free service between Shoreham Beach and Shoreham Town. It will be available between 9am and 5pm from Monday to Friday.  The service provides an escort to assist you from your door to your destination.

If you would like to use this service, you must book in advance by calling 01273 440460 between 12.30pm and 2pm on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday.

Cyclists are advised to use the shortest alternative route via Riverside Road, Kings Beach Green, Brighton Road and High Street during the closure.

Additionally if you have a query about the closure or the replacement bridge, the site office in Riverside Road is open to the public every Friday morning between 10am and 11am.
