Suggestions for West Sussex County Council Health scrutiny

Residents are being encouraged to send in their suggested topics for the West Sussex scrutiny work programme for the coming year.

County Councillors are meeting towards the end of February to look at priority areas for the scrutiny 2012/13 programme.

Christine Field, the current Chairman of the Health Overview and Scrutiny Committee, said: “We are keen to look at customer outcomes and would like to hear from residents on areas of work they’d like to suggest for our committees. We focus on decisions, services and policies that affect the whole of West Sussex, unfortunately we can’t examine individual problems or complaints about the County Council as there are other ways of doing this.”

County Council Deputy Leader Lionel Barnard added: “The County Council’s Cabinet is responsible for the day-to-day decisions. It’s the role of those County Councillors who are not in the Cabinet to hold us to account for all our decisions and to consider whether service improvements could or should be put in place, and that’s where scrutiny comes in.”

The committees cover all areas of the County Council’s work affecting the whole of West Sussex, including health, social care, education, schools, highways and transport, youth services, environment, economy, the Fire and Rescue Service, and community safety.

All suggestions received will be considered by County Councillors when setting the overall priority areas for the work programme. The deadline for comments to feed into the session is Monday February 20.

The process will be ongoing, and individuals will be able to submit a suggestion at any time during the year either by using an online form or by contacting their local County Councillor, as the work programme is kept under regular review to ensure the highest priorities are looked at in the most timely way.

To find out more, or to submit a suggestion, visit the County Council website at and search for ‘scrutiny and select committees’, and complete the online form or write to the Scrutiny Team, Room 105, County Hall, Chichester, West Sussex, PO19 1RQ.
