The Laurels opens its doors in Rustington

West Sussex County Council’s The Laurels specialist day service is set to open its doors this month to people in Rustington.

Carers and people from the Littlehampton area will be able to look around the centre on May 16 from between 10am to 6pm to see what is on offer.

It offers a range of services such as activities, personal care, advice and information as well as a mobility suite and a computer room. It also welcomes local people to be involved in the centre through volunteering opportunities.

The Laurels specialises in working with people with acquired brain injuries as well as dementia care and those with other complex and longer term needs who meet the County Council’s eligibility criteria. In addition it offers support and information to their carers

It is one of eight specialist day centres that were developed by the County Council following the decision last year to move away from a one-size fits all day care service into specialist focussed provision.

Ninety-five-year-old Gertrude King has been coming into the centre for a number of years and finds that attending the Laurels has played a large role in keeping her mentally and physically active.

Since starting at the Laurels the community physiotherapist has developed a weekly programme of exercise for Miss King in the mobility suite with support from the staff.

Her one-day a week at the centre is the only contact Miss King receives with the outside world. She says she looks forward to one of the simplest things many of us take for granted, which is having a conversation and interacting with others.

Peter Catchpole, Cabinet Member for Health and Adults Services, said: “We have worked very hard to develop the service at the Laurels for local people to access. We want to support customers to help them find a level of independence despite their many complex needs.”

People interested in visiting the centre should contact the manager first.

The Laurels is at: Sheepfold Avenue, Rustington, Littlehampton, BN16 3SQ.
