The Rowans opens its doors in Worthing

West Sussex County Council’s Rowans specialist day service is set to open its doors this month to people in Worthing.

Carers and people from the local area will be able to look around the centre on May 24 from 9am to 4pm to see what is on offer.

The Rowans specialises in services for people with and physical and sensory impairment and people with acquired brain injuries (A.B.I) and also supports other people with complex or longer-term needs who meet the County Council’s eligibility criteria. In addition it offers support and information to their carers.

The Rowans offers a range of services such as activities, personal care, advice and information as well as a mobility suite and a gym. It also welcomes local people to be involved in the centre through volunteering opportunities.

It is one of eight specialist day centres that were developed by the County Council following the decision last year to move away from a one-size fits all day care service into a specialist focussed provision.

Among those who have been helped at the Rowans is Alan who came to the service through the A.B.I. group and has moved on to voluntary work with Sussex University and helping other customers at the centre.

Another customer supported by the centre and the community connector was Susan who had suffered a stroke and now has poor mobility.

Staff helped rehouse her into a small disabled-friendly bungalow, which has improved her quality of life and independence.

Family and friends have said she is like a new person, particularly because she now has a pet cat.

Peter Catchpole, Cabinet Member for Health and Adults’ Services, said: “We have worked very hard to develop the service at The Rowans for local people to access. We want to support customers to help them find a level of independence despite their complex needs.”

People interested in visiting the centre should contact the Manager first.

The Rowans is in Steeple View, Tarring, West Worthing, West Sussex.
