Thinking about care for the elderly at Christmas
Christmas and New Year are traditionally a time when families come together. Often it is also when they talk about the past year and what may lie ahead in the future.
Some older people and their relatives may take the opportunity to discuss whether they need some extra help or care. This help may be in their own home or in a residential or nursing home.
Often they and their families don’t know where to get the information they need to make the right decisions. This is where the latest version of the West Sussex Care Guide can help.
As well as the benefits and payments checklist, the 2011/12 Care Guide lists care at home services (domiciliary) and care homes in West Sussex. It also includes a raft of information on day care and community care services, extra care housing schemes and support for carers.
The guide is jointly produced by West Sussex County Council and the West Sussex Forum, which is the largest representative body of independent care providers in the county.
Peter Catchpole, Cabinet Member for West Sussex County Council’s Adults’ Services, said: “Making the right decision when the time comes to consider care is important both for older people and their relatives. These decisions can be very difficult to take.
“We have developed the Care Guide to help people make vitally important decisions in their lives. It is an important part of the County Council’s campaign to help residents Age with Confidence.”
