Tourism figures on the increase

Welcome To Worthing!

Latest figures show that the value of tourism to the local economy continues to grow.

The latest Economic Impact of Tourism report, produced by Tourism South East shows that in 2010 Worthing welcomed in excess of 2.2 million visitors while almost a million more visited the Adur district.

The total visitor spend in Worthing was just over £119 million and just over £40 million in Adur; up by 2% on the previous year.

These local figures are reflecting what’s happening across the whole of the UK and in particular what’s happening in the South East; day visitors were up on the previous year while visitors staying overnight fell slightly.

With 1.9 million day visitors coming to Worthing and about half of the overnight visitors staying with friends and relatives the ‘staycation’ is certainly evident and the trend looks set to continue for a while yet.

The tourism industry supports just over 3,000 jobs across the Worthing and Adur districts; valuable employment.

Cllr Bryan Turner, Deputy Leader of Worthing Borough Council and Cabinet Member for Regeneration says: “I’m really pleased to see so many people continue to come to Worthing. We are working really hard to make the area more vibrant and attractive. We are taking advantage of the staycation trend hence investing in our new Tourist Information Centre at the Dome.

Janice Fraser, the Tourism Development and Marketing Officer for Adur & Worthing Council adds: “Visitors continue to tell us how much they love Worthing and with Hits to the VisitWorthing website up around 36% this year there’s certainly plenty of interest in the area. We are very excited about our new VisitWorthing Information Centre at the Dome complex. We’re looking forward to moving in, in time for Christmas and continuing to welcome even more visitors next year. “
