Warning issued as cold callers try to prey on vulnerable residents affected by floods

Residents affected by the severe flooding in West Sussex are being reminded to stay on their guard against the advances of rogue traders.
It comes after reports of unsolicited traders appearing on the doorsteps of households in Littlehampton, offering to carry out repair works on properties in the immediate aftermath of the bad weather and local flooding.

Residents being pressurised in this manner, when they are in such a vulnerable position, are advised by Trading Standards officers to say ‘no’ to these cold-callers.

If work needs to be carried out on your property, always use a reputable business to do it for you.
West Sussex Trading Standards’ Approved Business Directory contains a list of hundreds of businesses, thoroughly vetted by Trading Standards officers, who have signed up to the ‘Buy With Confidence’ scheme.
There are a number of builders, decorators, electricians and home maintenance businesses signed up to the scheme in the Littlehampton and Bognor Regis areas alone.

County Council Cabinet Member for Public Protection, Christine Field, said:

“Whenever an emergency of this nature occurs, it seems to bring unscrupulous traders out of the woodwork who prey on the vulnerable.

“If you do need emergency work done to your property, ignore the claims of bogus callers if they turn up at your door.

“Use a Buy With Confidence accredited business that has been checked by our Trading Standards officers.”

Copies of the West Sussex Buy With Confidence Approved Business Directory can be picked up from stockists around the county.  For more information or to view an online version, visit our website at or call 01243 642124.

West Sussex County Council has also placed skips in the worst affected areas and relaxed its policy regarding skip licences while the clean-up operation is completed.
