West Sussex’s Meals on Wheels service cooks up a special treat to mark the Diamond Jubilee

Every Meals on Wheels customer in West Sussex will receive a special Jubilee cake this week to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

On Friday, June 1, the day before the Diamond Jubilee weekend, West Sussex County Council’s Meals on Wheels Service will be delivering 1,400 cupcakes to all customers across the county.

These will go out as an extra item to everyone who receives a meal on that day and will be supplied by the Meals on Wheels food providers Apetito and Nibbles.

The Service has a wide range of meals on offer, from hot cooked meals to salads and desserts. Meals can be delivered frozen as well, to enable residents to stock up their freezer.

Peter Catchpole, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Adults’ Services, said: “The Jubilee will be a wonderful occasion and this will be a great chance for some of our residents to celebrate it.

“I was a WRVS visitor, visiting people who had just come out of hospital, so understand and appreciate the reasons why someone may want to take up our Meals on Wheels Service, which declining numbers of local authorities now provide across the country. They may be less able to cook their own meals, or have just come out of hospital.

“Our dietician-approved menus aim to give at least a third of people’s requirements for energy, calcium, iron, zinc, folate and vitamin C.

“In a recent survey customers gave our service a resounding thumbs up with 90% of residents satisfied or very satisfied with the service, 88% considered the meals excellent value and 84% were happy to recommend the service to others.”

The Service is delivered by the Women’s Royal Voluntary Service (WRVS) across the county and can also include dietary needs such as diabetic, lower fat, gluten free, reduced salts and pureed meals and desserts.

There’s also an afternoon tea service providing sandwiches and homemade cakes.

No assessment is needed to apply for Meals on Wheels. People can contact the service direct.
