Youth Support and Development Services – Consultation Reminder

West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Families, Peter Evans, has issued a reminder about the public consultation into important changes being proposed to County Council services for young people, their families and communities in West Sussex.

The consultation closes on October 14.

Peter said: “There is still time for people to express their views, and I want to stress again that no final decisions have been taken.”

The changes proposed to the Youth Support & Development Services (YSDS) continue the work already underway to focus resources on targeted services for the most vulnerable young people. This includes those at risk of offending or re-offending and those not in education, employment or training (NEETs).

They are set against a background of changes to the law where responsibility for giving careers advice and guidance changes from the County Council to schools and colleges.

A review of youth services has so far saved £2m. Now a further £2m must be saved over the next three years, as part of the county council’s commitment to reduce spending by £79m.

With the reduction in money the Council has to change what services it can provide to young people. We hope to encourage communities, other organisations’ and young people themselves to get involved with youth projects.

The consultation invites comment on a number of issues including the proposal to maintain County Council run youth centres only in those communities that are identified as being in greatest need.

The detailed youth services plan can be seen online at http://www.yourspacewestsussex.co.uk/

When the consultation started, Peter said: “We need to consider new and imaginative ways to provide services. A number of youth activities have already been taken over by the voluntary sector and local community groups. We are keen to find out what more can be done to support this Big Society agenda.”

Although anyone can respond to the public consultation, the Service would particularly like to hear from:
The voluntary sector
·          Schools and Colleges
·          Young people
·          Minority groups
·          Staff
