Local developer to purchase Adur civic centre site

Significant new employment opportunity is anticipated to result from the redevelopment of Adur District Council’s Civic Centre site fronting the Brighton Road, Shoreham-by-Sea.

Following a two stage competitive tender and interview process, Sussex based property company Cantium Developments has been selected by Adur Council to purchase the approximate 2.20 acre site, which it is anticipated will be redeveloped to provide a circa 60,000 square foot food store together with 300 car parking spaces.

Adur council leader, Neil Parkin, says: “We had a lot of interest from a wide range of potential buyers but we elected to run with Cantium, as they are locally based company, who bring with them significant retail and development experience, a strong track record of successful delivery, coupled with access to national and international finance, as a consequence of Palmer Capital having a minority ownership of the business”.

Commenting on having been selected as buyer for the site, Cantium’s founder and chief executive Chris Boulter said: “We are delighted to have been appointed by Adur  council to work with and alongside them in delivering this key gateway opportunity. The site has huge potential to make a truly positive contribution to the town, both in terms of its retail offer, employment opportunity and urban design, the latter in a manner that will enhance the approach to the town centre and which will also pave the way for the future redevelopment of the harbour. Unlike other potential sites in the locality, a new retail store on this site will physically connect in a very complimentary way to the existing retail offer provided by Shoreham town centre, being as it is within walking distance of the High Street and unfettered by the need to have to cross any busy roads”.

The Council is expecting to vacate the building by the end of the year after which demolition and site clearance will soon follow so as to enable redevelopment.

Cantium was not prepared to comment upon whom will be taking the food store, other than to say that competition was ‘pretty fierce’.

Both Adur & Cantium commented that all parties have quickly appreciated the benefit of an efficient working relationship with each other on this major project.  Bringing forward a development of this scale in this economic climate is a major vote of confidence in Shoreham by Cantium and the investors behind it.
