Emma Norton is concerned

Emma Norton is the Liberal Democrat’s candidate for Marine Ward. She has 3 children and has lived in Worthing for over 30 years.

Emma originally trained and worked as a marine biologist, but following a career change, she demonstrated her life-long-love of learning and became a college lecturer specialising in Engineering.

Emma is a keen scuba diver and paddleboarder and loves our local countryside and coastline. “I am really concerned by the scourge of sewage being dumped in our rivers and at sea. We need clean water and beaches, for our residents and the local economy.”

As for the more controversial issue of re-planting kelp at sea, Emma believes that the reduction in trawling off our coastline and restoration of kelp beds will help heal our Sussex marine environment and help in the fight against climate change. “When talking to Marine residents, the issue isn’t the beds themselves, it’s how the seaweed that ends up along our beaches is dealt with. We need to invest in schemes to utilise this nutrient-rich debris for agricultural and other purposes. Other parts of the country have, so we should too.”

In her work, Emma sees many of the challenges our young people face and wants Worthing to be a safe place for all. Emma would like to see more opportunities for everyone: with affordable homes, the right local facilities and good public transport links. She recognises the need for a sustainable future to protect not just our local environment, but the entire planet.
